SEMANA SANTA DE TOLEDO – EASTER WEEK IN TOLEDO

The Easter brotherhoods show outstanding ability moving their statues through the narrow streets of the city.
The Easter week celebrations in Toledo are characterised by the solemn nature of the processions. Special mention should be made of those that take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The city’s streets, monuments and historic buildings help to create a very special atmosphere during the various acts, especially by night. Furthermore, on these days, those in attendance have a unique chance to see inside all the churches, convents and monasteries that are usually closed for the rest of the year – they open their doors for this celebration, to host the different religious services on the programme.
Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deep-rooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. This commemoration has centuries of history and tradition, remembering the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The streets of the majority of Spain's cities, towns and villages become the stage for religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation in memory of Christ's death. Music, art and colour come together in magical processions - solemn parades in which crowds of people accompany religious images on their route through the streets.
